In Brazil, "Serra do Mar" is the mountain range that reaches from Espírito Santo in the north to Santa Catarina in the south. Until the arrival of the first European settlers, the region was completely covered by Atlantic Rain Forest, and made up 16% of the Brazilian area. From this original forest, there is only eight percent is left. But despite this, it is still the most species-diverse Rain Forest in the world. Seven percent of all worldwide known animals and 25% of the plants occurring in Brazil can be found in this area!
Paraná alone has 12 million km2 of Atlantic Rain Forest which covers the complete Serra do Mar and parts of the lowlands of the coast. This region is a compact and luscious life-way joined with seldom-found beauty and richness of fauna and flora.
The single-track line through the Serra do Mar is one of the highlights in Paraná. Opened in 1880, it was one of the big challenges of that time for engineers. The track starts in Curitiba at 934 m above sea level and ends in Morretes just a few metres above sea level. The distance to Morretes is approximately 70 km. It is one of the most impressive train rides of the world and leads through luscious tropical vegetation of the Atlantic Rain Forest providing numerous breathtaking bridges and turns.
