On May 31st of 2009, FIFA confirmed that Curitiba will be one of the 12 host cities for the 2014 World Cup Brazil. The other cities are Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Natal, Recife, Fortaleza, Salvador, Cuiabá, Brasília and Manaus. Now Curitiba rushes to start the work to develop the city to suit the strict FIFA requirements.
The matches will be held at "Arena da Baixada", home of Atlético Paranaense. The stadium is extremely modern, with great focus on comfort, safety and visibility. The soccer club is already beginning construction to adapt the stadium to suit FIFA requirements in relation to covering, illumination, parking, people flow for both entrance and exit, etc. The current capacity of the Arena da Baixada Stadium is 26.000 spectators and for the 2014 World Cup this number will be expanded to 41.300 seats.
Besides the modernization of the Arena da Baixada Stadium, the city will also receive improvements and investments to further improve Curitiba's great infrastructure. New road connections and a subway will be constructed, improvements to the collective public transportation system, accessibility and urban mobility, investments in ports and airports, public safety, environment, health, sanitation, energy and hotels.
Curitiba has around 160 hotels and 16.000 beds and until 2014 the expectation is to increase this number to 184 hotels and 20.000 beds. Approximately 40% of these lodging options are located within 2 kilometers of the Arena da Baixada Stadium. Also, 30% of the bars and restaurants, 5 malls, 10 supermarkets and 13 hospitals are located around the stadium.
The city has also a project to be the 2014 World Cup Communication Center.
